Healthcare is a major industry sector within the UK; vibrant and with a consistent history of growth, even during economic downturn.
Within the UK Healthcare sector, the dominant purchaser is the National Health Service. It is, in fact, the largest health service in the world and reputed to be the world's fourth-biggest employer. To put things into perspective, the NHS alone has a budget of £94bn this year - three times bigger than the UK Defence budget.
Within the NHS, healthcare services are delivered through two organisations:
Hospital and Community Health Services (HCHS), responsible for hospital-based care. This accounts for the lion's share of NHS expenditure.
Family Health Services (FHS), responsible for frontline, community-based primary care. FHS accounts for the highest spend on pharmaceuticals.
